Our Coating Process
Mueller Coatings combines advanced vacuum metalizing with specialized spray coating applications to deliver optimal results for our customers. Our precision-focused vacuum metalizing process ensures an even coating free from buildup, while our customizable spray coatings provide an adhesive base and a range of functional or decorative topcoat options.
Benefits of Vacuum Metalizing and Spray Coating
Vacuum metalizing, a physical vapor deposition (PVD) method, involves evaporating metals—most commonly aluminum—in a vacuum chamber, bonding them to various substrates. It’s the preferred choice for industries that demand:
Mueller Coatings’ vacuum metalizing process is ideal for addressing specific industrial requirements, including:
- EMI/RFI shielding
- Moisture and vapor barriers
- High tolerance for coating uniformity and adhesion
- Reflective finishes with unique qualities
Our facility includes twelve automated vacuum chambers (thermal evaporation and magnetron sputtering) in four different sizes, allowing us to meet diverse application needs and part sizes.
Our Coating Process
Step 1: Tooling and Part Loading
We begin with custom-designed tooling fixtures to secure and mask parts, ensuring efficient processing and minimal manual handling. Our goal is to enhance efficiency and accuracy, adhering strictly to quality standards and client specifications.
Step 2: Spray Coating Basecoat Application
For reflective, chrome, or metallic finishes, we apply a proprietary primer to ensure strong adhesion. Using advanced HVLP spray guns, we apply basecoats via:
- Six-axis robotic paint cells
- Automatic reciprocating paint cells
- Manual application for prototypes and low volumes
Fixtures then enter convection ovens for curing, ensuring a smooth, uniform base.
Step 3: Vacuum Metalizing
Fixtures loaded onto carousels enter the vacuum chamber, where a heated tungsten filament vaporizes metal, creating a uniform coat across each part. Our specialized process enables coating thicknesses from 1,000 angstroms for reflective coatings to 20 microns for EMI/RFI shielding.
Step 4: Spray Topcoat Application
Mueller Coatings offers topcoat options for added resistance to moisture, abrasion, and chemicals. Our selection includes:
- 2K urethane and UV-cured abrasion-resistant clear coats
- Functional industrial coatings, such as Teflon and ceramic
- Decorative topcoats with appearances in gold, bronze, chrome, or satin finishes
Each stage of our process is conducted with environmental responsibility, ensuring the highest standards in quality and sustainability.
